Once your vault is set up, you can start adding your passwords and keeping them organised. This article covers how to add passwords manually, let Bitwarden save them automatically, and keep everything tidy so you can find what you need quickly.
How Bitwarden Saves Passwords Automatically
The easiest way to build up your vault is to let Bitwarden do the work as you go. When you log in to a website, Bitwarden will offer to save your credentials automatically.
- Log in to any website as normal
- A prompt will appear from the Bitwarden extension asking if you'd like to save the login
- Click Save and Bitwarden stores it in your vault
- Next time you visit that site, Bitwarden will automatically fill in your details
Over time your vault fills up naturally without any extra effort.
Adding a Password Manually
If you want to add a password without logging in to a website, you can do it manually:
From the browser extension:
- Click the Bitwarden shield icon in your toolbar
- Click the + button to add a new item
- Select Login
- Fill in:
- Name — the website or app name (e.g. "Netflix" or "ANZ Online Banking")
- Username — your email address or username
- Password — your current password for that site
- Website URL — the address of the website (e.g. https://www.netflix.com)
- Click Save
From the web vault:
- Go to https://vault.lanclub.nz
- Click New Item
- Fill in the same details as above
- Click Save
Generating a Strong Password
When signing up for a new account or changing an existing password, let Bitwarden generate a strong one for you — no need to think one up yourself.
- When adding or editing a login, click the Generate button next to the password field
- Bitwarden will create a strong random password
- Click Use this password to apply it
- Save the item in your vault
The generated password is automatically saved — you never need to remember it or write it down.
Organising Your Vault with Folders
If you have a lot of passwords, folders help you keep things tidy. You might create folders like:
- Banking & Finance
- Shopping
- Social Media
- Work
- Streaming Services
- Government / Health
To create a folder:
- Open your vault at https://vault.lanclub.nz
- In the left sidebar click New Folder
- Give it a name and click Save
To move an item into a folder:
- Open the item in your vault
- Click Edit
- Under Folder select the folder you want
- Click Save
Using Favourites
For your most-used logins, mark them as a favourite so they appear at the top of your vault for quick access.
- Open the item in your vault
- Click the star icon to mark it as a favourite
- It will now appear at the top of your vault list
Finding a Password Quickly
From the browser extension: Click the Bitwarden icon — it will automatically show logins that match the website you're currently on. If nothing appears, use the search bar at the top to find what you need.
From the web vault or mobile app: Use the search bar at the top to search by website name, username, or any keyword.
