How Automatic Updates Work

If you're on the Pro plan, LanClub automatically manages updates for your computers using a tool called Action1. This article explains what gets updated, when it happens, and what you might notice.

Why Updates Matter

Software updates aren't just about new features — the majority of updates contain security patches that fix vulnerabilities in your operating system and applications. When these vulnerabilities go unpatched, they can be exploited by attackers to gain access to your computer, install malware, or steal your information.

Keeping software up to date is one of the most effective things you can do to protect your computer. On the Pro plan, LanClub handles this for you automatically.

What Gets Updated?

LanClub manages updates for two categories of software on your computer:

Operating System Updates

  • Windows updates (including security patches, cumulative updates, and feature updates)
  • macOS updates
  • Linux system updates

Third-Party Application Updates Common applications such as:

  • Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat
  • Microsoft Office applications
  • Zoom, Teams, and other communication tools
  • Java and .NET runtimes
  • VLC, 7-Zip, and other common utilities

If a specific application you use isn't covered, email help@lanclub.nz and we'll look into adding it.

When Do Updates Run?

Updates are scheduled to run at times that minimise disruption to you. By default LanClub schedules updates during off-peak hours — typically outside of standard business hours.

Some updates require a restart to take effect. Where possible we schedule restarts for times that are least likely to interrupt you. If a restart is required you may see a notification on your screen.

Will Updates Happen Without Warning?

For routine security patches — yes, these are applied automatically in the background. You may not notice them at all.

For larger updates such as major Windows feature updates or macOS version upgrades, LanClub will notify you in advance via your support ticket or email before proceeding.

What if an Update Causes a Problem?

While rare, updates can occasionally cause issues with specific applications or hardware. If you notice something isn't working correctly after an update:

  1. Submit a ticket at https://help.lanclub.nz or email help@lanclub.nz
  2. Let us know what isn't working and when it started
  3. We'll investigate and roll back the update if necessary

See our What to Do if an Update Causes a Problem article for more detail.

Can I Delay or Pause Updates?

If you have a specific reason to delay updates — for example you're in the middle of an important project and don't want a restart — email help@lanclub.nz and we can temporarily pause updates for your device.

We don't recommend delaying security updates for extended periods as this leaves your computer vulnerable.

How Do I Know What's Been Updated?

LanClub keeps a record of all updates applied to your devices through Action1. If you'd like a summary of recent updates applied to your computer, email help@lanclub.nz and we'll send you a report.

In future we plan to send Pro plan customers a monthly summary automatically — watch this space.
